Q: Can I update my Singapore NRIC with my new name while I’m overseas? #
No, you cannot change your name on your Singapore identity card (NRIC) while overseas.
The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) requires all NRIC holders to attend in person in Singapore to:
- Re-register or replace their NRIC;
- Submit their Deed Poll and supporting documents for a name change;
- Have their photograph and fingerprints taken (if required).
⚠️ NRIC Name Change Must Be Done in Singapore #
Even if you have legally changed your name by Deed Poll (executed either in Singapore or overseas), you must:
- Be physically present in Singapore;
- Submit the name change to ICA in person, along with your original Deed Poll and supporting documents;
- Update your NRIC within 28 days of executing the Deed Poll, if required to do so.
ICA does not currently accept NRIC name change applications via email or post for overseas applicants.
🛂 What About Singapore Passport or Other Records? #
If you are overseas and wish to update your Singapore passport, you should:
- Contact the nearest Singapore Embassy or Consulate;
- Enquire whether the name change can be processed based on your Deed Poll;
- Provide any additional documents requested.
Note: You may be required to change your NRIC in Singapore first before a new passport with your updated name can be issued.
